Homeopathy

Over the past two hundred years homeopathy has developed as a complete system of medicine seeking to unlock the natural medicinal properties of substances of both plant, animal and mineral origin. In its early days it was an approach developed almost entirely by doctors and to this day it continues to play a significant role in primary healthcare in various parts of the world.

In Europe and the U.K. increased public awareness of the limitations and drawbacks of many prescription medicines has led to renewed interest in approaches which may offer alternatives. In particular there is a greatly increased recognition that physical ill-health is almost always best treated not in isolation but as an integral part of the lifestyle, temperament and constitution of the individual. Approaches which take this view are sometimes referred to as "holistic".

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that treats mental, emotional and physical illness. It aims to assist the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Homeopathic remedies are given on the basis of being carefully matched to a detailed profile of the person and his or her complaint. Their action is not so much to impose solutions as to encourage the organism itself to complete the healing process and to this end the homeopath always aims to use the least amount of medicine necessary. The precision and refinement of homeopathic remedies ensures that they can be of value in the treatment of all manner of conditions and in all ages of patient.

While homeopathy is often used in the treatment of acute conditions it is equally applicable across the whole range of chronic conditions - from general stress or fatigue to depression, arthritis, persistent or recurrent infection, skin conditions, behavioural problems, menstrual and menopausal problems, irritable bowel syndrome, headache and anxiety. Good homeopathy will not only drive away the symptoms but will also help the patient deal with the cause of the illness and regain good health.

Andrew Terry is an experienced homeopath and has been practising professionally in Devon for eighteen years. He has worked with a very wide range of chronic and acute conditions and with all age-groups. In addition to prescribing homeopathic remedies he recommends nutritional and naturopathic measures when they are indicated. He aims to provide a personal and accessible service and encourages clients to keep in touch with him as treatment progresses. He has an active awareness of the part which non-homeopathic approaches to healthcare can play and aims to work alongside them whenever possible. He is a member of the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths.

Initial consultations for adults can last up to an hour and a half. In addition to gaining a very thorough picture of the particular condition to be treated, I will need to look at your family and medical history as well as gaining an insight into the background of your complaint or illness. In the selection of a homeopathic treatment, the person’s lifestyle, temperament and constitution can all play a very significant part. (All of our discussions are of course held in strict confidence). With young children it is often helpful if the parent(s) can supply a brief written account of potentially significant aspects of behaviour, history etc etc.

I make every effort to ensure that your course of treatment takes no longer than necessary. However, homœopathy aims to do more than merely offer short-term relief and, in many cases, it is not realistic to expect immediate full improvement. It is to be anticipated that treatment may take weeks or months and may involve at least two or three consultations. Where it is appropriate I will continue treatment on the basis of your correspondence - in such cases I will be dependent upon your own written reports and updates which should all be sent to my home address (below).

My home telephone number is 01837 840718 and my e-mail address is a.j.terry @ ex.ac.uk . I do not charge for your brief telephone reports or queries during treatment. However if I have not seen you recently, and your call or report amounts to a consultation involving detailed discussion or analysis and the recommendation or despatch of a remedy, then there will be a charge of between £7.50 and £30.00. I am often (but not always) available on the telephone in person between 10.00 and 11.00 a.m. on Saturdays. Then, as at other times, if I am not able to take your call I will come back to you as soon as possible.

If I have to phone you for discussion myself then I will usually ask you to call me back so as to keep my costs (and thus my fees) to a minimum.

After an initial period of treatment many people choose to visit on an occasional basis for a check-up once or twice per year.

After your latest consultation your file will remain ‘active’ for twelve months. Thereafter it will be archived and the fee for your first subsequent consultation will carry a surcharge of £5.00.
