Julie Green, EDH - Dental Hygienist

After a career in meteorology in the Armed Forces I finally realised I held
a long ambition to become a Dental Hygienist.

Initially I studied dental nursing at Highbury College in Portsmouth,
gaining both the National and BTEC qualifications and a student of the year
award. Following I undertook various placements working within the NHS,
private, hospital and community sectors and gained a wide range of
experience.

Moving then onto British Dental Hospital I studied for a further 2 years for
the Diploma in Dental Hygiene, finally qualifying in 1999.

I am firmly committed to promoting a high standard of oral care for the
patient.

I also believe greatly in the importance of continuing education and
development and attend courses, seminars and lectures where possible and
keep updated with current ideas by regularly reading the latest Dental
Journals.

I am now permanently settled with my husband and young son and work in
private practices in both Tavistock and the city centre.

Generally the responsibilities of a dental hygienist include :-

	Assessment
		Examining, assessing and documenting oral conditions.
	Planning
		development of individualized oral hygiene programs for home care development of a professional dental hygiene plan of care to meet the client's needs diet analysis and counselling for dental caries control and prevention educating clients regarding oral health planning and conducting oral health programs in the community .
	Implementation
		non-surgical periodontal therapy (removing disease-related deposits on the tooth surface such as plaque and calculus as well as unsightly tooth stains for cosmetic purposes) applying decay preventing agents such as fluoride and sealants
	Evaluation
		evaluating the success of a home care oral hygiene program evaluating the dental hygiene plan of care and the client's satisfaction with it. Dental Hygienists are regulated by The General Dental Council and work under the direct supervision of the dentist.
